Two thousand five hundred and fifty-eight years ago a little fleet of galleys toiled painfully against the current up the long strait of the Hellespont, rowed across the broad Propontis, and came to anchor in the smooth waters of the first inlet which cuts into the European shore of the Bosphorus. There a long crescent-shaped creek, which after-ages were to know as the Golden Horn, strikes inland for seven miles, forming a quiet backwater from the rapid stream which runs outside. On the headland, enclosed between this inlet and the open sea, a few hundred colonists disembarked, and hastily secured themselves from the wild tribes of the inland, by running some rough sort of a stockade across the ground from beach to beach. Thus was founded the city of Byzantium...

I have read more than a dozen histories of Byzantium, but Oman's, old as it is, stands out for style, wit, and observation. He gives short shrift to the great emperor Basil II under whom the re-invigorated empire reached its greatest extent, but otherwise, he is so immensely readable and detailed that the book feels utterly fulfilling. Most highly recommended. A great Classic.,Product details

History of the Byzantine Empire [Didactic Press Paperbacks] Charles Oman 9781545464663 Books Reviews
It's intended for history-buffs, which I guess I'm not. While it was informative and decently written, it contained more information than I wanted to have.
Good book
Even as a history buff, I had trouble getting through this book. That said, I knew almost nothing about this empire, so it was interesting.
lucid and up to the point.
This was a fantastic history of the Eastern Roman Empire. It was well written and easy to follow. You'll love this book.
Tere has always been a great blank here for me, but this is well written and fills in most of the dark places. At this point I don't need more detail than this. Nice read and god pace thorough for me unknown territory.
This book provides a very superficial introduction to the history of the Byzantine Empire and of the great city of Constantinople (now Istanbul.) Since it is very much a story of aggression, invasion and warfare, I would have liked, at the very least, a generous helping of maps, so I would better understand which hoards were invading from which Steppes.
I found the book readable enough, but I am not certain of its credibility; it doesn't read like rigorous scholarship. If you are sensitive to regicides, patricides, matricides, infanticides, blindings, decapitations, usurpations and other gritty affairs of state, take care--it's a long and very bloody story!
